{"id":96,"date":"2019-04-07T05:05:04","date_gmt":"2019-04-07T05:05:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/vern.falkor.gen.nz\/wp-usa2005\/?p=96"},"modified":"2019-04-07T05:30:36","modified_gmt":"2019-04-07T05:30:36","slug":"mission-station-the-pinnacles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vern.falkor.gen.nz\/wp-usa2005\/?p=96","title":{"rendered":"Mission Station &#038; the Pinnacles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>September 16th, \u00a02005<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the morning we drove back to Carmel Mission to have a good look through\u00a0the station and the grounds. And of course we had to pay. We were invited to\u00a0join in the holy communion that was due to commence while we were there but\u00a0decided very quickly to give this a miss. It was really quite interesting\u00a0looking around the old Mission Station which still functioned as a school\u00a0and church. The Mission is extremely old, built in 1771 and renovated in\u00a01931 so it is now in quite good condition. We walked into the church to\u00a0admire the intricate wood panellings and then to the old museum where there\u00a0were many old photos and paintings depicting the Mission\u2019s history.<\/p>\n<p>Photographed our first Humming Bird. At around mid morning we made our way\u00a0to the Pinnacles National Monument (Park) via Salinas and a subway sandwich\u00a0fast food place which was about a 1 and half hour drive east. Brendan saw a\u00a0Tarantula crossing the road and couldn\u2019t believe that a spider could be so\u00a0big. He was the only one to see this and was quite disappointed because we\u00a0didn\u2019t want to turn round and go back to investigate. After we parked the\u00a0car we chose a track from the information board and then climbed up for\u00a0about an hour and a half to nearly reach the highest point. It was extremely\u00a0hot, but we had fabulous views of the surrounding rocky walls and peaks. The\u00a0photos don\u2019t do justice to this place. As much as Brendan wanted to see\u00a0bears, mountain lions and snakes the best we could manage was a squirrel.<\/p>\n<p>On our way back to Mountain View we stopped off at Gilroy which has hundreds\u00a0of outlet shops. We didn\u2019t know where to start looking first. We did quite a\u00a0bit of shopping here always looking for the elusive bargain. Also decided to\u00a0eat here.
