Monday 22nd Awoke to a beautiful, fine & clear blue sky with snow capped mountains dominating the small fishing town of Kaikora. We spent a relaxing day in and around kaikoura after our almost three days of driving. It was the first time we had been in the South Island so close to winter so we were looking forward to spectacular snow mountain sights. The weather at Kaikoura was good good all day, but a strong, cool easterly wind started mid morning and it became somewaht unpleasant on the stony beach. We investigated the shops and Information Center and in the afternoon drove to the seal colony, the lookout and Fyffes Conservation Reserve. We were considering going out on the Whale Watch, but found that it was cancelled owing to the rough sea. We noticed that the helicopters tours to observe the wales was continuing with lots of tourists being herded out, then back in. Top Ten Park ensuite cabin $70, rating 6/10.
