Wednesday 1st October
Kaka Point – Fairlie

We made this a fairly long driving day so that we will be able to travel inland to the Edoras film site tomorrow. The day was cloudy with a light south westerly breeze when we set off this morning, but the cloud dissapated and we had a partly fine day. Our route today took us through Balclutha, Milton, Dunedin, Palmerston, Oamaru.  At Highway 83 we turned inland again and travelled up the Waitaki River, through Kurow to Omarama and Twizel to Fairlie. We stopped off at the Moeraki Boulders for 30 minutes, walked the beach, took photographs.

After the tourist bus left

We b ought some lunch at Oamaru and had our picnic outside an
Anglican church in Duntroon with 4 interested sheep looking on.

Lunch at the church

Passed Waitaki Dam, but at Aviemore we crossed over the dam and drove on the north side of the lake until we got to the Benmore dam, where we crossed back to highway 83 to continue on to Omarama.

Aviemore Dam and the tranquil lake

Evidence of lots of snow having fallen in the Mackenzie Basin and still lots of snow lying around Burkes Pass. At Fairlie we booked into Aorangi Motels at $78.   Rating 8/10.
